13 Acres added to Green Hill Park

A beautiful plot of land, approximately 13 acres in size was recently added to Green Hill Park. This land, nestled just east of Trinity Ave (off Lincoln Street) and just south of I-290 was formerly owned by the Sisters of Notre Dame (see aerial photo above). The land was purchased by the Greater Worcester land Trust for $430,00.00 and will be resold to the city for inclusion into Green Hill Park for $172,500.00. As City Manager Michael O’Brien stated “purchasing and preserving this land would replace land that has been lost from the park over the years”. Amen to that.

Arboretum

An arboretum in a general sense is a botanical collection composed exclusively of trees. The Worcester Garden Club, in collaboration with the Worcester Department of Public Works & Parks has created an arboretum of Asian Longhorn Beetle-resistant trees. On Arbor Day, 2012, the Club and the Worcester Forestry Operations planted 14 young trees representing 12 different species resistant to the ALB. They complement the existing trees that are either resistant or host to the invasive beetle. Together, they establish the Green Hill Park Arboretum which has a specific purpose: to teach visitors about selecting the right tree and planting it in the right place in their landscapes.
